Apna Style Prawn Chilly
Fresh prawn cooked the Kerala way — with coconut, curry leaves, and a tartness that comes from kudampuli or tamarind. Coastal Kerala cooking at its simplest and best.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 300 g Prawns
- 2 nos Green chillies
- 1 nos Tomato — cut into small pieces, large
- 15 nos Cashewnuts
- Red chillies (Kollamulaku)
- 30 g Coconut powder — grated
- 1/2 glass Milk
- 2 tsp Coriander Powder
- Fenugreek A little (Uluva)
- 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 50 g Jaggery (Sharkkara)
- Mustard seeds
- Curry leaves
- Oil
- 1 Spoon Lemon juice
- Coriander leaves
- Salt
Preparation
Step 1
Powder the cashew nuts and mix it with milk to get a thick paste.
Step 2
Fry the red chilles with fenugreek, coriander powder, turmeric and grated coconut till the coconut turns brown.
Step 3
Mix it with water and jaggery and grind into a paste using a mixer grinder. Set aside.
Step 4
Fry the prawns in a little oil till the prawns turns golden and set aside too.
Step 5
Heat a little oil in a pan and crackle mustard seeds and add the green chillies and curry leaves.
Step 6
Pour the coconut -red chilly paste into it.
Step 7
Add the tomatoes, salt and the fried prawns and let it boil in low flame till it is cooked.
Step 8
Once cooked, add the cashew paste and garnish with coriander leaves and squeeze little lime on it.
Step 9
Serve while still hot with rotis, naan or rice.
Tip
Seafood cooks in minutes. The single biggest mistake is overcooking — the moment fish turns opaque or prawns curl and go pink, they are done.
