Ulli Puli (Ulli Mulaku Curry)
Ulli Pulli is a vegetarian side dish that goes fine with dosa, appam, almost everything. Ulli Puli can be stored fresh for up to two days. Ulli Puli is a unique and special dish with chopped onion cooked with tamarind mixture and other spicy ingredients.
Ingredientsfor 5 servings
- 2 nos Onion
- 5 nos Green Chillies
- 2.5 tsp Chilly Powder
- 1.5 tsp Coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- Tamarind Large lemon size
- 2 tbsp Jaggery
- 1/2 tsp Asafoetida (kayam)
- 1/2 tsp FenugreekPowder — roasted
- 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
- Salt, to taste
- Curry Leaves, a few
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing Ulli Puli Curry, first chop the onion and green chillies finely.
Step 2
Soak the tamarind in a cup of water for some time and extract the juice.
Step 3
Heat a cooking pot and add coconut oil. Add mustard seeds when oil gets heated and allow it to be tempered and then add the chopped onion and green chillies and temper it until it gets light brown colored.
Step 4
Now slow down the flame and add chilly powder and coriander powder.
Step 5
Mix it well and allow the powders to be mixed and heated well.
Step 6
Stir in the tamarind juice to the mixture and give it a good stir. Allow the mixture to boil well.
Step 7
Add enough tamarind juice and water according to your taste buds.
Step 8
When the mixture boils, add salt, turmeric powder, asafoetida and fenugreek powder. Stir the mixture well and add grated jaggery and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 9
Now the mixture will be a little more thick. Check whether the salt, sour and sweet taste is balanced according to your taste buds.
Step 10
Turn off the heat and add curry leaves.
Step 11
Goes well with any type of Rice, Dosa, Idli, Appam etc.
Step 12
Can be stored for more than 2-3 days.
Tip
The oil separating from the masala is your signal that the base is properly cooked. Do not add the main ingredient before you see those pools of oil on the surface.
