Mathi Meen Peera (Fish Thoran)
Finely chopped fish stir-fried with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves — this thoran is the workhorse of the Kerala meal. Quick to make, always welcome on the banana leaf alongside rice and sambar.
Ingredientsfor 6 servings

- 1/2 kg Small onion (Kunjulli)
- 2 tbsp Ginger — chopped
- 6 Green chillies crushed - Kantharimulaku is the best
- 4 piece Kukum star kudampuli
- 2 cup Coconut
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp Coconut oil
- Salt As rqrd
Preparation
Step 1
Clean and wash the fish using salt and lemon juice and cut it into small pieces.
Step 2
Slice small onions after removing the skin.
Step 3
Handmix grated coconut, sliced onion, chopped ginger, crushed green chillies or kanthari mulaku and turmeric powder.
Step 4
Put the fish pieces in a pan or meen chatti, add salt, tamarind (kudampuli), coconut mixture and mix it well.
Step 5
Add little water and cover the pan with a lid and cook in medium flame until all the water gets evaporated.
Step 6
Sprinkle 2 tablespoon coconut oil over the dish just before removing it from fire.
Step 7
Serve while still hot with rice.
Tip
Grated coconut goes in last and cooks just long enough to warm through. Overcooking makes it chewy instead of soft.
